My attention was first drawn to the expressive power of trees when I was exposed to living works of bonsai as a youth, and noticed the feelings they evoked in me. I like trying to elicit different moods and emotions from the trees I make. And I hope that if my trees reach down to something inside you, you’ll also pay more attention to the trees outside, and see what feelings they evoke in you.
When a tree drops its leaves, the whole of nature is laid bare. Trees are iconic symbols of both life and nature. Whether I make a tree sculpture or a painting, I try to evoke the truth, beauty and spirit of nature. I use tree forms to try to express some basic truth or feeling, like breezy lightness, subtle grace, the reality of life and death. Steel wire is my medium of choice in sculpture.
